Hello! Welcome back to my blog! As many of you know, I’ve been on the ketogenic diet for about four years now. I did go on a hiatus for about six months when I had a terrible restaurant job, but I’ve been back on keto for seven months now.
Like many of you, I find myself on the go a lot. I try to cook all of my food and meal prep on my days off, but sometimes life just happens. I have relied on Starbucks coffee more than I’d like to admit. What can I say, they have heavy cream!
My go-to drink is a decaf latte made with heavy cream (if you want to know why I drink decaf read this). I’ve been drinking this for months. Not every day, mind you. But, I would drink this a few times a month.
I would even supplement this for a meal sometimes when I forgot my lunch at work. Would I rather spend a ridiculous amount of money at a restaurant (I work in a hotel in Vegas) or grab a coffee with enough fat and calories to hold me over? I’ll go with the coffee.
However, I recently made an awful discovery: the heavy cream at Starbucks has carrageenan.
What is carrageenan? It’s a food additive, that’s natural, but it’s not good for you. Carrageenan causes inflammation. Let me say that again, Carrageenan causes inflammation!
One of the purposes of the ketogenic diet is to reduce inflammation in the body. What are you doing to me, Starbucks?
Carrageenan is actually used in medical studies to cause inflammation in order to test anti-inflammatory drugs. How scary is that? It’s used in the heavy cream as a thickening agent. I knew it was used in almond milk sometimes, but I never thought it would be in heavy cream.
I never even thought to ask to look at their heavy cream because it’s heavy cream! Why would there be something inflammatory in heavy cream? It was my husband’s idea to look and now I’m glad he asked to see the container.
I do have to mention that not all Starbucks have the same heavy cream. The Starbucks at Albertsons uses the heavy cream that Albertsons carries and it does not contain carrageenan.
Don’t be afraid to ask to see the labels of products you’re consuming! Always be aware of what you’re putting into your body. Even if it seems safe (like heavy cream) you never know until you check!
