Today I’m going to briefly talk about collagen and how I add it to my daily routine. I drink a mixture of bone broth, collagen and Himalayan pink salt every day.
I realize that I consume a lot of liquids on keto. A lot. I don’t particularly like getting my calories from liquids because I prefer chewing and eating my food. However, my keto coffee, my veggie shake and my collagen broth are so important to my nutrition that I can’t get rid of any of them.
My collagen drink is especially important in my diet because it helps me to reach my daily sodium levels and it’s part of my beauty routine. Yes, my beauty routine.
So, what does collagen do for you?
Collagen is great for your entire body. You naturally produce collagen but your body slows the production as you get older. It helps with joint pain, helps with muscle growth and boosts your metabolism.
What about for your skin? We’re all concerned with looking younger, right?
Collagen improves skin appearance, texture, your skin’s elasticity and helps your skin cells to renew more quickly. You may have noticed that collagen is in a lot of topical face creams. However, it’s much better for your skin to ingest the collagen instead of putting it on top of your skin. Topical solutions don’t do much for your skin because they don’t penetrate and get into your cells but drinking/eating the collagen does.
That, my friends, is why I consider collagen to be part of my beauty routine.
Where can you get collagen? Well, collagen is found in bone broth (I just pick mine up at my local grocery store). But, I also purchase Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen Hydrolysate 2-Pack from Amazon to get a more concentrated dose. It’s grass fed and honestly the best quality collagen I’ve been able to find. You can get a single container of Great Lakes Gelatin Collagen as well (you only save a dollar and some change by getting the two pack). I just prefer getting two at a time.
I heat up the organic bone broth, half a serving of collagen and a few pinches of Himalayan pink salt. It’s so good! (Trust me, add the pinches of salt because it will taste amazing and it’s the perfect way to hit your sodium levels on keto!)
I only use half a serving of the Great Lakes Collagen because the bone broth has collagen in it naturally. My husband, on the other hand, prefers putting the collagen in his coffee (weird, right?) so he uses a full serving. (By the way, I don’t recommend putting it in your coffee. They claim it’s tasteless but, let’s be real there is a taste, put it in some bone broth or water.)
I hope you found this useful and decide to add some collagen to your diet! I know that it seems a little pricey, but I honestly think it’s worth it. I’ve spent so much money on creams and moisturizers for my face but I wasn’t thinking about what I’m putting into my body and how that makes a much bigger difference in my skin’s appearance.
